The Shirt Tails

While not as well known as some of the other gangs from this era, the Shirt Tails certainly were a force to contend with. Their moniker derived from the gang members wearing their shirts untucked, outside of their trousers. The exposed shirttails were seen as their insignia, allowing other gangs to identify them; it also gave them greater flexibility to hide an arsenal of concealed weapons such as guns and knives. Most notably they were often aligned with the Dead Rabbits and fought against the Bowery Boys during the Draft Riots of 1863. While the gang had a membership of a few hundred, they would eventually cease to exist just before the beginning of the Civil War, with many of their members splintering off into other gangs.
